I am not talking about the category strip... but I want to put a background as the forum display background (the bit that has the title of the forum).

admincp/style manager
select all options for the style you want,then in the extra css box for the background add the url to the image you want to use

addendum like this..........
"background-image: url("yourpath/yourpath/images/?????.gif");"
without the quotes
