If you've ever made a hack then you get the drift of how templates work. The important thing is that not all variables are available in the global scope. For example, $logincode might only be set in index.php.

It would involve either a php file mod or a phpinclude mod to get them working specifically in other templates.

Yes well, people usually do them for you. Or just request it if not done. It's not very hard as so many were made.
