Default Linux v Windows Server pro n cons

Whats better, why and any info appreciated

I know why i think - but would like a definitive answer of sorts.

I use linux btw

Talking for hosting here btw

My reasoning? Inherently more stable? Faster? More secure?

windows is bloated. you can get more performance out of a linux box with the same specs as a windows box. also the linux box in most cases is cheaper. however if you are so inlove with windows that you cannot live without it you should break that habbit and try some linux hosting.
one os that i'm not familiar with is Mac OS server (yes i know its based on bsd) just not sure how that system would handle people (due to its risc chipset)

Linux is cheaper and has more popular support, particularly for open-source software such as Apache--used more than all other web servers combined.

It's horrible for desktop use but good for server use, at least a web server.

I'd like to extend this question: what about if one requires ASP support and wants to have some level of integration between your ASP application and your vB board: what are the actual implications of running vB on a Windows box (as opposed to the generic Linux r0x0rs m1 b0x0rs comments thanks )

sigh, you know maybe if we are talking about windows 98.

Windows Server 2003 is rock solid server, it is made to be fast and powerfull. It should run just as well side by side with the same hardware as a RHE box.

You can run apache on windows if you don't want to use IIS

And if you need IIS for some reason like asp.net then you need a windows box.

I am more inclined to use linux for a webserver and windows for a workstation and file server for my WINDOWS network

If you wan to run ASP, I believe there's software or a compay named Chilisoft that can do it on Linux, although naturally the .NET Framework only runs in Windows so true ASP(.net) requires Windows.

ChilliASP is rather limited compared to what it can do in windows, you would be best sticking with a Windows 2003 box with IIS6

There are other options like FreeBSD or Debian.

No, I was referring to the OP about other options - there are more to servers than just Windows or Linux. There are other Unix OSes out there that - for example, many would say that FreeBSD is the most stable and most secure in a server environment.
