Default New Users Must post in Forum X before full access

I am trying to encourage users to begin posting. I figured a good way is requiring them to post in my Intros and greets forum. Once they post, they automatically get to post in any other part of the forum. I do not want to have to moderate this, but be automated.

Is there a way that I can do this?

Make newbies usergroup limited to posting only in your newbie forum.

Then have a promotion set to change their usergroup to "registered user" or something upon reaching a postcount of 1.

Allow registered users to post in the usual places.

It annoys me people would think a hack would be needed to do this!

ok, i never noticed the promotions link. But i it's still not working:

i created a group calle newbies with a promotion post of one, and set the forum permissions. once they do 1 post they will be promoted to my members group.

The problem i am having now is how do i make this the default group, so that all new users that have completed the activation process now have this new group as their primary?

i thought about modifying the default members group first, but i want to make sure this is the best way.

Thanks for your patience and help.

  • Create a Fullaccess-Usergroup
  • Set the permissions of your "Registered" usergroup so members can only post in your greets forum.
  • Create a promotion which promotos users with >= 1 post to your Fullaccess-Usergroup

i understand that. i did all that. The part I can't figure out is how to make that newly created 'full access' group the default group that new users are added to after they complete registration. By default new users are added to the members group.

Uhm ... AFAIK you can't
New members will go to usergroup "Registered" after successful activation.

Why do you want new memberrs to be in your "full access" group?
I though you wanted to promote them there when they got at least 1 post in your greets forum ...

ok, i think i can do it this way, what do you think:

1. Take the defualt group 'registered members', change name to 'newbies' and reduce their access to my meets and greets forum.
2. Create a newgroup called 'general members' and give them full board access.
3. Create a promotion for 'newbies' where once they post 1 time, promote them to 'general members'.

i already have 2 and 3 working, but item 1 is the sticker as there is no way for me to create a custom group and make it the default group that new members go into.

how does this sound?

This is exactly what I proposed in post # 4 (except changing the groupname which isn't really necessary)
