How to create a member jail?

Forgive me if there is something like this already under another name, but I have an idea that I would like to somehow implement on my board.

We get frequent trolls that are banned quickly, but we also have long-term members who 'go crazy' for a week, rack up a lot of warning points, and then are banned. Usually a couple months later they will e-mail us and ask to be let back in. At that point, the moderators discuss the pros and cons etc. and make a decision.

Well this is purely arbitrary and mostly based on personal preferences, and I would like to set up a more fair system. Basically, users would go to 'jail', where they would be put into a new usergroup marked as such. Their names would be displayed on a new page in a public place, and other users would be able to give them 'pity points' or something along that line, where you could receive only one point from one person (similar to karma?).

Basically, if enough people think it's ok for you to come back after a certain period of time, (say, at least a month, and over 100 points), then a user would be allowed to come back. This allows for a lot more feedback from the community on how they feel about this person, instead of just the decision of a couple mods.

Please let me know your ideas, and if you think there is a hack already that I can modify to suit my purposes. I appreciate your input, and thanks!

Hmm.... you could setup a special usergroup to set them up for and you could make it displayable on the user groups page?

Speaking of trolls, www.trollkingdom.net uses a similar system, called daycare.

And yes, make a custom usergroup to trap them, or even make it your default group and they have to be released after.

I don't have the reputation points set up for my users, but is it possible I can limit it to just this group?

I think so, yes. Make that usegroup able to give rep, but not others.

You could add a field to a table and then run a cron to remove the points at intervals...

If you wanted it seperate like that...

Thanks for the help. I think I'll set up a separate forum, and then allow mods to post polls where people can vote to let people out. We'll see if it works.
