Default What display mode do you prefer? & showthread page sizes.

At vB sites, what display mode do you most frequently set as your preference?

I love the Hybrid feature, but not very many vB forums use it properly. So i stick with Linear.

I had noticed that most of my users were switching to Linear. I used to use either Threaded or Hybrid myself, but have also switched to using Linear. Still, there are some things I miss about Threaded/Hybrid, most notably, the ability to quickly switch to a post in the list (Duh!) and to see what post a new post is replying to.

For this reason, and after talking to users, I am working on a new Display Mode, Linear List. This looks like Threaded, with the list at the top of the page, but the list is strictly linear.

Below the post list, where one sees "Prev" and "Next" in Threaded mode, there is also a link for viewing the post being replied.

On a related topic, many of our users have to access the site from remote locations where modem is their only option. We were seeing long download times for our most common operation -- displaying posts.

Linear mode outputs the smallest pages, then Hybrid, and the biggest pages were for Threaded. We had our Linear/Hybrid users reduce the number of posts to display per page. For our Threaded users, we reduced "Threaded Mode: Maximum Cached Posts" to a very small number (I do not recall exactly.)

As an example, take this thread from vb.com:
http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showt...?t=95657&pp=10

* 10 posts per page setting in effect for Linear or Hybrid
* stylesheet was inline, 5133 chars
* show similar threads was on
* 43,467 bytes for the 10 postbits in Linear or Hybrid

Page sizes:
Linear: 85,207
Hybrid: 94,484
Threaded: 113,412 (Threaded had 13 cached posts in page.)

Your mileage may vary, but you get the idea. Those are big pages when you are using a modem.

Hmmm... only 10 votes? The rest of you not viewing posts at all?

No Threaded users?
