I have seen quite a few messages in posts with a * next to them (and they are yellow).
Is there any reason for this, and if so, is it done with a hack? |

It's based on the [high] tag here which uses a replacement (at least in vB2). You should switch to another style set if the yellow has a personal vendetta for you.
