i thought it was free?

infact i remember a thread on another forum where they said it would always be free (the link was posted in #vBorg) when did they start charging or am i on the wrong site?

They've always had charged versions and installations, but I believe there has always been a free version with no official support and such.

You're absolutely right. AFAIK there still is and will be a free version. They just renamed the free version to a test version or something like that.
