Default Freelancing

Question for everyone...

My question is...

With all the programmers here, and users needing help, how may are doing the freelance work for free? Is freelancing the way to go?

The reason that I am asking is that I am currently on a medical leave from work, and interested in taking up a new life in the freelance world doing PHP/MySQL. Is there a living to be made doing this? Or is running a site like the below just a big waist of time?

As fellow 'freelancers' are you making enough to live off?

What tips can you share to others that are trying to do the same?

I just started a new site for freelancing called Direct Freelance.

I've done work for free, but only where I know people deserve to get it for free. If I'm on a site where they don't have vB licence checking, I usually ask for something in return.

Never freelance when you don't know if they're entitled to the help.

Freelancing is a great learning job, if you have the time and commitment. Just to clarify, if you are a freelancer, that doesn't mean you have to do work for free. A freelancer is simply somebody not subject to long term contracts with a client, that's all.

Freelancers do quite often work for free, to build their portfolio and resume.

I'm not big into freelancing, I rather establish a site and sell my services (like PHP scripts) off of it, with transactions made through Paypal. Everything I have done in freelance work has been for free.

I don't do this type of freelance work (MySQL/PHP), so I'm not quite relevant.. but I definitely used to make enough to live quite well off of web freelance work. The market has shifted a bit in the last 2 years, though. It's been harder and harder for me to grab clients who want more than just a short term thing.

Since I've stopped selling aggressively I've been doing mostly work for trade. I find it's much more peaceful that way. I definitely have done a lot of free work in the past -- and tend to get excited about certain projects and jump into them even knowing I may not get paid.

I release a lot of free script and try to help, but I also do the commercial side, it's not something that makes millions or anything like that yet. But I find freelance work does help ease the bills at least :P

I think with this market anyway, what goes around comes around. I don't mind paying for scripts some scripts if it's taken a small army to put together The best way to go is start off small and find something your really good at and go from there...

I do a lot of paid work, it is not enough to write home about, but it is ok.

Their being a market for it is iffy, I have had good weeks and bad (would never use it as full time income.)

Freelancing for free offers a great learning experience.

When I first started university to get my CS degree, I opened up a c++ message board and tried to help as many people as I could. I created many projects for free.

I don't really view it as 'free' though, because you are getting so much knowledge from these freelancing projects. And I'm sure many members on this forum would agree that creating projects for people *such as hacks for vBulletin* gives knowledge that php/mysql books can't offer.

Unfortunately I've become so busy with my personal projects, that I can no longer freelance for free.
