Alright guys i had a question about the new vbulletin 3 coming out sometime or another.

I see that it has a paid subscriptions option built into it. I like this as my board will soon be moving to paid membership.

My main question however deals with attachments. I remember reading at one time that the attachments in vb 3 will be handled as files and not through the database? Is this correcT? If so when i upgrade to this... will i lose all previous attachments? Thanks for any help on this issue.

Yes you can have your attachments as files instead of in the database. As far as losing any attachments I don't really think so.

What happens is that by default, attachments remain in the database - When you upgrade, you may have to run one of the maintenance "update counters" to generate thumbnails for your existing attachments, should you use the "generate thumbnails" setting of vB3...

Then, when you change the storage type to files, the script will make the necessary changes

As I prefer my files in the database, I just kept the default setting in vB3, so it's all the same as vB2 from that point of view.

Alright... thanks guys. I would like to have the attachments as files as they would be easier to move from server to server that way if it needs to ever happen. But in the database is fine as well. Thanks again!

I find it easier to backup if it's in the database.

For shared servers though I find it is better to have them as files on the server. They tend to get mad when your database starts to take cycles away from other customers.

True. It's better overall for server loads etc. to keep them as files. Also easier to prevent hotlinking. But I keep them in my database for easier backups and server moves etc. I can still prevent hotlinking as well.
