Beginner to vB

Hiya,

I'm getting vB up and running and the site I idolise is www.peugeot-gti.net. I'm trying to add lots of its functionality but can't even see how I add new things to the menu.

Is there a beginner/noob/numpties guide to customising vB please?

That site looks great. You realize vB is only one part of what you see there? They also use vbPortal for the home page and PhotoPost for the photo gallery.

I would set up a test board on your localhost, then tweak around with coding in that. If you develop something you like, you can transfer it over to your live board--but, that way, if you mess something up, your active board will stay fresh.

I see that the site is using other software as well, but I cannot see yet how you integrate a new thing in the menu.

I will check out the forums tutorials and try to get over the first hurdle

most hacks are pretty simple to add.
and if you dont have alot of time dont try and install a big hack.

I see, things are added through changing the templates?

I installed the welcome panel hack I'm gonna back that up now, get it running on the test data I have with various hacks until its usable with my hacks and then update the forum with the latest forum data and make the transition.

I guess I have to upload everything into www.mydomain.com/
instead of www.mydomain.com/forum to make everything work when you first go to my domain?

This is fun I can do some basic PHP and I'm halfway through my software engineering degree so soon I'll be joining you guys

That's perfect! Sounds like it's too late for you to turn back now, Russ T. You're a goner, soon-to-be-addicted-just-like-the-rest-of-us.

The best way to learn is to install a few simple hacks. Following the installation instructions shows you how the files and the database queries/tables and the templates work together. Be sure you know how to back everything up first, read everything posted in the hack's support thread, get used to using the search feature (lest you irk the turtle!), and post a message asking for help when you have problems.

I make full use of search dont you worry

I'm on a vB downer now though

One) Ikonboard 3 converter is very patchy No one is helping

Two) I cannot find any good galleries to install other than www.4images.de which really wont install, its well dodgy

Three) Until I fix one and two I can't get on with any more mods



Your right though this is addictive, gonna write me some hacks soon, the biggest project is setting up different classes, non club members (for my car club site) and club members, who have different privaleges etc, all being checked against a member database with membership expiries and admin tools for the club membership guy

Where will it end? :P I already want another licence so I can start another community.
