Too many mySQL connections to server.. they shut me off!

I'm going to upgrade to a dedicated server soon. The problem is that they said my site was using over 600 connections and 40% of the CPU that my site was on!! They mentioned that there could've been SQL queries that were being opened but not closed.

Unfortunately I cannot show you the site right now because it's been taken offline. Hopefully it'll be back up tomorrow.

What can be causing such a heavy server load?

Lots of things could cause high server loads like that... How many users do you have online at normal and peak times? Do you have Teck's microstats hack installed to see if you have a high number of queries on any of your pages?

There's about 100 users online at average. 150 at the most. around 6000 unique a day at the moment. Yeh, I have teck's microstats hack installed. I have a lot of hacks installed, so I'm sure this is part of it. (feature store, arcade, vB portal, and numerous other small things ) But what would cause a SQL connection to be opened but not closed?

Go to your admin/config.php

Find:

$usepconnect =

Make sure it is

$usepconnect = 0;

Also, vBPortal is well-known for running up server loads - if you turn debug on in your admin/config.php, then add ?explain=1 to the end of your URL for your homepage, you can see how many queries it creates. If you stop using vBPortal, you will find that the server loads will improve dramatically.

Ack, it was set to 1. I'm guessing that would make a big difference.

Are there any other 'home page' hacks that look exactly like vb portal?

Yes, setting it to one would cause your max connections to "max out" unless your server is set up to accommodate it.

Try vBHome Lite, which is very query-efficient.
