I have a VB board that averages about 1000 posts/day. Does anyone know any good hosts out there? Our current host seems to be backing out on us.

I need something that would be able to handle that load.

Are you looking for a dedicated server? 1000 posts a day is a lot either way.

How many users are normally online?

I've usually got 30 minimum on at a time. Our current server was hosting us for free, and they're backing out I think.

Would dedicated be the way to go?

if you are talking about billsfanzone.com then i think you should go ded. it will cost a bit of money but you're site will run better and you can't be kicked off the server because you own it.

The main obstacle is usually that dedicated hosting is expensive, but if you have a very busy forum dedicated hosting is needed. You probably wouldn't need a dedicated server for a normal 50-60 online users, but if it gets busier that that you might have to. Give it a thought.

Also, running a dedicated server isn't just plugging it in. Maintaining and setting it up will take time and patience.

Does anyone here actually run a server from your location and host your boards yourselves? What kind of line do you use? DSL? T1?

Or is there a specific host that you like that you can refer me to?

I wouldn't suggest hosting it yourself. If you do, it has to be at minimum T1.

I recommend www.racknine.com - they have very cheap shared plans (which is all you need for anything less than 150 users online at once). Tell Kevin or Matt that I sent you and they'll look after you.

Erwin, what do they charge for going over the 50G limit? My board peaks at 130G/month during certain months.

I think what you're looking for, if getting a dedicated server, is a managed dedicated server (if you don't know linux administration). www.nocster.com is the host to go with for good prices on managed servers
