You need to be in WYSIWYG mode to use it.

hi miss lynne,
so users need to change their options through usercp? is there anyway where it will be the default option for all? |

They can change their options of just click the little Switch Mode button, .
And yes, you may set a default for newly registered users in AdminCP > Settings > Options > User Registration Options > Default Options > Message Editor Interface > WYSIWYG |

Search has always been a resource hog which is why you are allowed to turn it off, or turn it off per usergroup, or set how often it may be used. If you are a big board on your own server, you may want to look into sphynx.
