Default Kitten Captcha

I'd like to try a photo (how many kittens in photo) Captcha like Rackspace uses: (see bottom of form)
http://www.rackspace.com/forms/contactsales.php

I could add a human verification option with the answer.

How do I add the photo to the registration form? Is there a mod for this or do I edit a template?

Thank You

Jamie

I have not seen a mod like that which means you would have to write something yourself.

So you want to use the "Random Question" feature built into vBulletin to ask how many kittens... That will work but it's not ideal to have only 1 question.

But you have a good idea here... You could post 1 picture with several things and ask several questions based on the 1 picture such as:

How many kittens are in the picture?
How many white kittens are in the picture?
How many sleeping kittens are in the picture?
How many balls of yarn are in the picture?
etc....

You would edit your register template.

Search for:
Code:
{vb:raw human_verify}
And use HTML to place your image before or after that code, will probably take a little work to make it look good.

Only "problem" with this is you should have an alternate option for people using "screen readers" due to eye-site problems- I really can't think of a work-around off hand for that right now though.

I just started using www.keycaptcha.com. It has entirely stopped spam bots. The answer to a prayer!

I also considered using https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=263521, and in fact installed it, with a 49 cent charge to register for my site. But decided to try key captcha first, and it is working just fine. We still do get the occasional human spammer registering, and if that gets to be too unbearable I will have to switch to using a payment for registering, which should stop all spammers.

KeyCaptcha looks interesting, but are the images local? Do you have full control over the mod, or is part of it coming from their service? It makes me wary, depending on a third party that I do not know.

I looked at keycaptcha and quickly determined I'd never join a site that put me through the hoops of having to do a puzzle or match as many things as they wanted. Also one of their match the color things didn't even work for me (i matched the colors but it didn't like it) that is a big NO NO for a captcha for me... Don't think I'll ever use it.

Asking questions about a picture however is a good idea IMO.

How about a JavaScript minigame where you have to Move a Key over a lock or something like that ? Easy to implement, easy to solve, well requires JS to Be turned on but recaptcha needs JS as well.
Just an idea i had in mind lately ...

I agree with you, I don't like keycaptcha cause it is a third party. It has stopped the spam bots, but it is still allowing human spammers, mostly from china. I am moderating new registrations and it is an annoying amount of extra work.

I am going to switch to LancerForHire - Paid Registration [and Anti Spam!] and charge a one time fee of 49 cents for registration. I hate to do it, it will definitely discourage casual members, but my site is very well established, a niche site, and I am hoping that people who care to join will jump thru the paypal hoop. We will see.

Any opinions out there? Have you found anything that defeats english speaking paid human bots? Adding an image, and asking questions about it, like Rackspace does, won't help with these spammers. I want to avoid moderation, although it is the best thing. It is quite labor intensive.

Also, I have about 10% of my members are legitimate members from outside the US, UK and Canada whose english may not be good enough to analyze complicated questions about a picture.

As long as you can stop the bots, try StopForumSpam, it weeds out some of the spamho's (human spammers). Then you will only have a few who get it, and it's easy to spot the ones with spam sigs and home pages. The ones who post a spam link in a message, my moderators nuke and report. There's no getting around that.

Also, be sure your member list is free of spam accounts. I checked mine and found hundreds who had never posted, but had spam links in their sigs and homepages, a magnet for drawing more spammers.

This can stop almost all spam: https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=254331

But like and good anti-spam tool you risk blocking legit members. I couldn't use it because it also blocked Tapatalk which a lot of my users use.
