Want to make sure I don't get hacked
OK, so i run a very closed forum (currently only 39 members) but decided Vbulletin was worth the price to give my member the best forum experience and to make it easier for myself because i am familiar with the control panels from other forums.
ANYWAY! back on track, I read in a lot of mods that i will have to chmod X file/folder to 0777 in order to install the mod but i've never chmoded anything in my life and all the mods and plugins and such work fine. So this has lead me to believe that my whole site is writeable. How worried should I be about getting hacked with a structure like this. if chances are good that i am not safe what should I chmod and what should i chmod it to? Or do i nor even have the option to chmod as i do not run a dedicated server? (I have shared hosting) thanks! edit also I am using hosting by Justhost.com if that matters. |

0755 is the normal default. It is highly unlikely that your whole root directory is writable though. Use an FTP client and right click one of the folders and select properties. That will tell you the folder permissions on most FTP clients.

Thank you Digital2 I have checked and all of my directories seem to be 755 or 750

That means that they aren't world writable and your fears of being "hacked" are unfounded.
