I've noticed there are mods that have won multiple times, as they get ported to a new version of vBulletin. Since you cannot nominate a mod that has already won, and creating a new version of the mod within the same version of vBulletin does not 'clear' the MoTM award, it seems illogical that porting it to the latest vBulletin version does.
I'm sure this will be met with a big 'meh' like most things lol, but, for a real world example of how this can effect people, and the board, I would never have voted for AME (which I obviously LOVE) had I realized it had already won twice already. Especially not when it was up against another fantastic and new mod like Live Topic. |

I can understand your reasoning, but i doubt we can do much in reality. There is no way we can match old threads with new threads created.

just taking a 30 seconds look when you lock the nominations would clear the situation...
btw, from what we see, the nominated cleared would make no possibility to have enough nominated in the list each months, there is not that much new products released lately... |

Not being able to see what has been nominated or how many times, how can you say that?
Just at a quick glance I see 27 new mods this month. Even if a few of them already had MoTM carry overs and were ports from older versions, that's still a lot of new mods. |

Nope. Every release (thread) has to have a unique productid. Also, people could/would simply change the id to get round such a move.
Not sure what relevance that is - any modification can be nominated, no matter when it was released. |

the relevance come from the title of the contest: mod of The Month... an update does not make a mod to be hot this month... it's something that was created or upgraded in form that makes it relevent... but anyway, i'm not releasing, not voting, not nominating anything, so i suppose my comment is worthless!
and anyway, this is debated a lot each 3 or 4 months, i think it's giving nothing to comment the system. |

The question is, does it have value enough to do. And when I see the same mod getting MoTM 3 times and a very good mod someone put a lot of work into like Live Topic not get it because of this, I think the value is there. The idea behind MoTM after all was to reward and draw attention to good mods for members and encourage mod developer and give them something to aim for. The way it currently works seems to detract from that goal, at least a little. If a mod already has an award it really should just stay with it. Also, is there a way to list or search for MoTM winners, other than manually looking through the poll results? I poked around a bit and didn't see anything. |

There simply is no link between various releases of the same modification, any such linking would have to be manual, and I really cant see that happening (btw, it would be very nice if it could, but who is going to do it).

I do not see the problem.
If there is nothing out there that is better it should win. Have you never heard: - car of the Year for it's 6th year running - top salesmen for the last 30 years at the company - top this or that in a given time span It's about giving credit for good work and pointing out add-ons. Each thread that creates a poll lists 4-5 mods that you may have seen or not. EX: I do not shop around mindlessly for an idea thread by thread. I use search to find things. If I take a look at the poll for MOTM I may look @ the 4-5 options for the simple fact that it may be something worth looking at. This drives traffic to those mods that may not get it normally. |
