is there a way to get rid of the powered by vbulletin" in the top of the browser?

It's a phrase. Just search in the phrases and remove it. Or, do a search here for more specifics since this topic gets covered about once a week.

Im in the same boat. Found the phrase, but it has alot of code around it, not sure exactly what parts are safe to remove.

LOL i found it!

go to FORUMHOME template and find:

<title><phrase 1="$vboptions[bbtitle]">$vbphrase[x_powered_by_vbulletin]</phrase></title>

And Change To this:

<title>$vboptions[bbtitle]</title>

That's not exactly finding the phrase, but it works.
