That is an rss feed of threads, not posts. Turn on your rss feed at vboptions > external data provider > enable rss syndication

Well, I've never done that, but I suppose if I were to do it, I would start with the existing external.php page and modify it to do what I wanted.

external.php contains code not only for RSS (and RSS2), but Atom and JS syndication methods, so there would be a lot to work through. However, there may be hooks available for you to use to change up the query.
