Obama: 'I screwed up'

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Barack Obama on Tuesday admitted he made a mistake in handling the nomination of Tom Daschle as his health and human services secretary, saying Daschle's tax problems sent a message that the politically powerful are treated differently from average people.
President Barack Obama is interviewed by CNN's Anderson Cooper on Tuesday.

Daschle, the former Democratic leader in the U.S. Senate, withdrew earlier Tuesday as news that he failed to pay some taxes in the past continued to stir opposition on Capitol Hill.

"I think I screwed up," Obama said in a wide-ranging interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper.

reality of life is slapping Obama faster then I thought, he hasn't resolve a single problem and now he's recognizing his own mistakes....

This is hilarious. The guy is frickin human, of course he isn't going to get every single thing right. At least he has the balls to go on TV and say he screwed up. Thats actually what real leaders do, admit when they are wrong.

People trying to claim g-bay should stay open and we should continue to illegally detain people because of a totally unrelated and relatively minor issue is pretty silly isn't it?

The whole gitmo thing kinda makes me sick. If any other country out there had a camp like this and held our countrymen (or any of our allies) like this we would be up in arms! But since it's not us we think it's right...

Josh, that makes no sense.

I didn't think anyone was trying to say that BO was some divine power and is infallible and that his closing of gbay was given to him via a FedEx letter from god and as such must be the right thing to do.

Closing gbay is the right thing to do because it was the wrong thing to have in the first place and it violated the very thing it was supposedly made to protect: liberty.

Better to have a leader that is willing to do the right thing and admit mistakes when he makes them rather than a leader that opens a place like gbay, lies to the world about WoMD so he can invade a country and then pretend everythings A-OK!

No one is perfect, but you don't have to be to make morally right decisions. You just have to be a leader. So far, I think he's 'ticking all the boxes' as best as one can. There will be plenty more opportunities for Bushites to take digs at him over the next 8 years

Hmm...

The problems he inherited are not something that can be resolved over night. Even closing the incarceration camp at Guantanomo Bay isn't an overnight thing. The current issues like cleaning up the mess in Iraq, rebuilding the economy and our international standing will take years if not decades to correct. It isn't just the current sitting President that has to do this either.

The President of the United States has to be a leader and inspire the people of this country and within its sphere of influence to do the right thing. The last eight years have been mired with vengeance and clouded judgement as well as bad advice leading to the wrong decisions. I don't think that George W. is a bad person. He just followed bad advice and didn't make all the right decisions. No one person can. Hindsight is always perfect.

Our new President isn't going to be perfect. We can't expect that of any man. However if he has the right advisors and information than he can make proper decisions. Nothing is going to be fixed overnight, even Obama knows this. He has said from the start that things will probably get worse before they get better. This is from before he had the security briefings and the benefit of the information he now which only goes to show that things are worse than we were led to believe over the last year. However it is only his job to inspire and lead while presenting ideas to fix the issues. We as a people need to enact those ideas and as they say in Texas, "Grab the bull by its horns" and turn this country around. If you sit around and blame the government for your "lot in life" then you will be no better off in 4 to 8 years. If however you face the challenges ahead and tighten your belt a bit then you will get through anything and be stronger for it. Your life will be better. You may not be richer or have more personal resources. But it will be better for the experience, even if there are mistakes. The only way we can learn and put forth new avenues of thinking is to get it wrong once in a while.

Putting faith in one man is not going to achieve anything. Getting people to put faith into and embracing good ideas from that one man is what makes him a leader. If 3.5% of the country's population put faith into these ideas then you can make a lot of changes. If everyone that voted for Obama puts forth an effort to change and make this country a better place than there is no stopping this nation or what it can do. If we sit around and wait to be rescued by some stimulus package or a government bailout than we better pray because nothing can help us.

I agree Wayne, but President Obama does appear to me to be a bit unsure of himself now and that scares the heck out of me. Spewing unrealistic, idealistic rhetoric, to gain votes is one thing, but to release poorly thought through idealistic, ideology based agenda to the public AFTER gaining office is worrisome.

Perhaps his decision to close Guat Bay was a bit premature or releasing this intention to the public was perhaps a bit eager? I believe his administration should have thought this through a bit more before even considering leaking this to the public. A see a pattern of this developing(with his nominations) and I'm hoping this is just a symptom of getting his feet wet and getting his administration organization.

It's sort of a think before you speak thing and at this point President Obama is failing miserably at this. I'm a bit disappointed in this-politics as usual from what America has deamed another JFK Camelot-ish utopian administration.
