Since i am relativily new to vB and started with 3.7.x I would like to ask how i should proceed when 3.8 is final. Do I have to immediately switch to 3.8, risking that some of my mods probably won?t work for 3.8 and mess up a lot in my forum, incl. Skins I use, or can I wait and see for initiate Bugs in the Final to be solved and then switch to it slowly.
From my experiences with other Forum Softwares it clearly shows that its often not recommendable to switch to a new Version quickly, even if its final, because it often still contains a lot bugs and these better been worked out before switching. Also Skins / Mods Development usually takes some time to adapt, if those are continously been supported, to the new Version. I really love vB since I got it, and like i said, i?ve been through a lot of Forum Softwares over the last couple of years, and though some of them were very nice, vB is definately the best i?ve had yet. And I don?t want to make something wrong because I don?t know what I am doing. I?d appreciate any tips. Thank you and a happy new year 2009 to you all. ![]() Wolfseye |

Actually, you don't "have" to switch until you are ready to do so. In fact, its probaby a bad idea if your currently site is heavily modded. I asked this same question over on the support site and here was the response I got "You should upgrade to 3.8 when its 3.8.1" and I have to admit that, given the nature of software development, waiting is always a good thing. My point is that you are not obligated to follow the release cycle, its a bad idea generally.

So the change to 3.8 doesn?t mean that it fixes important things that 3.7.x is vulnerable to and should be updated to fix that ? Because that is my only concern. Or will there still be security updates for 3.7.x, if urgent, even if 3.8 would be final ?
Thanks for the Info btw. ![]() |

All current 3.7 fixes are pushed onto 3.8, and all 3.8 fixes are backported onto 3.7 (if applicable). Jelsoft supports the three latest branches. When 3.8 goes gold, Jelsoft will support 3.8, 3.7 and 3.6. They will drop support and declare end-of-life (EOF) for 3.5 at this point.

If a vulnerability is discovered it will always be patched as long a the version is supported.
