Is there a way i can prevent people from typing in my forums in all caps ?
The thread is ok but the actual post - its getting annoying now |

hum, i would first ask you if the admin is doing his job by asking the members to behave ?!
coding a hack JUST because the members are not behaving correctly usually mean that the admin is not doing his job... i'm not pointing at you, but that's what's going on usually when "people are doing stupid things and i want a hack to avoid it" |

The Admin (me) is doing his job and the problem i have is that it is a member of my clan on my forums always posting in caps. I have asked several times to quit it and they haven't bothered.
Now i can't kick them out of the clan for annoying me with caps posting....... hmmmm lol no i can't |

so you need no admin on your site if you do not want to kick the reluctant members... i would put real admin there, sorry...

this is for thread titles, and michael already indicated it was already in place...
the main thing is that if a rule is not respected by a member, not infracting that member for what it worth means you do not need any rule because anybody can break them... in society, it would be illogical, and a community is the reflect of the real life... the guy is not respecting your requests, Admin... that means he do not care about your role... kick him, that's all... why would we code a hack just for that stupid user ?! |

Totally agree with nexy, If he's not abiding by the rules, kick is ass out.

like nexi...
I suggest using the Infraction system and give them a warning. It's a very powerful tool when used correctly. If they continue just give them points - accumulated points lead to suspension then a ban. |

I can understand the "kim them out" but they have been a member for over 2years in the clan and only really just started to post on the forums. I have had another word and simply put it that they will lose the rights to post if they carry on.
PS: I didn't ask anyone to code a hack just for this user ! |

BUMP
So the consensus is that human intervention should take place as opposed to a better way to code the software? I'm in agreement with michael5472 that a software fix is the way to go. Not all of us have the luxury of people who have grown up with the technology. Some of us are getting people that have never posted on forums before---a different age group that tends to take criticism in a not so constructive way. Sometime a business decision to let it stay outweighs the slam 'em with a hammer approach. I tried the mentioned approach and the forum became a place where ALL CAP POSTING WAS THE SUBJECT AND ACTIVE MEMBERS TEAMED UP in an effort to slam the forum instead. My choice was to ban the majority of active members while the forum was still getting traction. Not a good idea. A better concept would be to make the SHOUT function something that didn't look at smilies or a few lowercase letters to disable it. As it stands, it really doesn't do much of anything. I'd rather the setting be removed from the admin control panel until there was some functionality built into it. The fact is the current feature as written is too easy to be nullified. I tried a post on the vB.com site as a suggestion, but NADA responses so here I am. The average age of my members is over 45. I'm not going to fight that battle on a ban approach when a simple (or not so simple) code change would deal with it automatically and I could simply say "sorry" that's a feature I don't want to change. It's just not worth the effort. What would it take to write a better SHOUT function as a plug-in? One that simply counted the number of 3+ letter words and had a setting to convert all of the post into lowercase if the max was breached. Such coding would be worth the effort for once done excluding the issue of version changes. I know that could be considered a stupid question by some, but any links toward related how-to docs would be appreciated. |
