Default Mod Graveyard Oh My

Exactly what is the purpose of removing attachments in the Modification Graveyard?

A problem I frequently encounter is attempting to fully uninstall a product
which has been moved to the graveyard.
The problem is that I can no longer download the Product for reference,
to find out if any files were uploaded during install or any template modifications were used.
The only way of knowing this is with the actual Product files and ReadMe's,
unless, of course, you have a grand memory or you documented your installs.

I have been lucky enough to normally find an old copy saved to my PC
yet I still wonder how many people do not have a backup for reference.

Any suggestions or comments welcome.
Thanks

suggestion: when you download a mod, keep the archive as a backup... a well known process

comment: bah, you're not the only one to complaint about this.

Well, if the modfication is potentially unsafe, then I understand removing the attachments. However, if the modfication is in the Modfication Graveyard for any other reason, then I believe attachments should be kept. Maybe create a sub-forum with the ones with attachments?

generally the only ones that are in the graveyard are unsafe ones, and ones where authors remove their hacks cause they want to throw fits and act like 2 yr olds

Yeah, I hate that too. Boofo did the same recently. Really need to grow-up some people.

Most threads in the GY that are not there for security reasons no longer have any files, because the author removed them.

The thread starter says "I want to be able to remove the mod completely and safely" -- Paraphrase of course. Then he/she goes on to say "How the hell can I do that if the attachment and INSTRUCTIONS have been deleted...?"

I too have said the same thing - and it's not about keeping the archive on your local machine CELINE - Well.... I suppose if that's the only way - it's the only way....

That sux

Those are not the only two reasons.

I recently requested a hack of mine be moved to the Graveyard as I could not get it to work correctly, so scrapped the hack, but I created an alternative to it.

So, there are other uses for the Modifications Graveyard apart from the two people keep going on about, including hacks/styles/graphics that breach copyright (i.e. is blatantly not the person's work).

Well - seems the discussions is not the validity of the Modifications Graveyard - The discussion is about open information share. Why treat the modification as if it's a top secret, locked down so the Soviets cannot shoot missiles at the US? Actually - you know what - I think if we were to discuss the validity of the Modifications Graveyard - there could be the possibility of dismissing the whole "I'M A HUGE SECRET!" aspect of it, which would lead to the attachments not being zapped away from public view. Don't you think a big bold PLEASE USE AT YOUR OWN RISK NEWB in big bold red letters would be enough to let the vBulletin.org Member know that that modification is tainted? I do And likewise for other scenarios, ie:

MODIFICATION NO LONGER AVAILABLE BECAUSE THE "AUTHOR" STOLE IT
or
MODIFICATION AUTHOR SNATCHED AWAY THE FILE ATTACHMENT BECAUSE HE/SHE IS A BIG BABY
or
SORRY THE VBULLETIN.ORG ADMINISTRATION DOESN'T WANT YOU TO HAVE THIS LITTLE GOODY, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera....
