Would any kind hearted coder be interested in writing a modification (for 3.6) that will pop-up a window warning users when their PM box is nearly full? The percentage that triggers the warning could be set via a setting within the Admin CP. The only complication would be how often the pop-up is shown - would it be possible to have it a flag on it, so if they click "Don't remind me again" then it doesn't show up again? This flag could reset once it goes back below and then above the % limit again.

this would be very nice! especially for 3.8.4

i noticed there is one in archives for 2.x but you can't even download it anymore.
