view new posts, else show last 10

On my forum homepage I have the standard "View New Posts" link. However, if there are no new posts, you just get a screen saying "Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms." What I would like to do is to use the logic:

if new posts - show new posts
else if no new posts - show last 10 posts in the same format

Which template(s) would I edit, and how would I do this? Is that success/failure template the same as the template for other searches? I thought about trying to use the last 10 mod, but I'm not sure how to do the if new else last 10 logic or which template to insert it in, and since I want this formatted the same as the view new posts results, I thought there might be an easier way...

And for guests who are not logged in, I would like to use the same logic for View Today's Active Threads

If a thread has bee posed today, show today's active threads
Else if no new threads today, show last 10 threads

Anyone know how to do this?
