Toshiba Exits HD DVD Business,

Blaming the loss of support from a key movie studio, Toshiba Corp. said it is pulling out of the HD DVD business, handing victory to Sony Corp.'s Blu-ray technology in the fierce format war over high-definition DVDs. Toshiba said Tuesday that it would cease production of its HD DVD players and recorders immediately and close out the business by the end of March.

No, the PS3 uses Blu-Ray.

Personally I have not had a reason to buy any HD movies yet. I was waiting on this format war to end first (and was rooting for HD-DVD only because it wasn't controlled by one company).

Considering I can't buy blank dual layer DVDs at a responsible price I doubt I'll be buying any blank Blu-Ray media any time soon. Personally I've moved on to just buying extra HDDs for back-up purposes.

I don't understand all these different formats, thank god VHS hasn't changed.

Blu-Ray isn't controlled by one company (the one you are referring to is Sony). Sony may have well invented most of the format, but it is not controlled by them. The format is controlled by the BDA (Blu-Ray Disc Association). A list of members can be found here.

Been waiting as well. Looks like I'll be buying a PS3 soon though. If I can get a Blu-Ray player for $500 or a Blu-Ray player that also plays video games for $500.
