Just thinking, I'm sure most people don't close their board(s) to perform a backup, but does everything backup fine if there are actions (posts, etc.) while downloading the database?

Yes, It backups well. No need to close the board or do anything securely

I don't see how it can ignore what is being wrote to the database... Unless it backs up servers-side first, which makes no sense.
