I would try to disable each mod at a time then view your forum page or whatever, and keep repeating the process untill you see a difference. It also could be 2 that are,
just my 2 cents

it sucks cause it happens intermediately so its hard to check to see which mod is doing it. i check my cpu usage, between 12 and 4pm and the shit is near 90% sometimes 100%. needless to say i get the server busy page.

Check your scheduled tasks, I've disabled a lot that weren't needed and throttled a lot back that were running during peak times/running all the time

ok i tried all that, i turned off all my mods. the CPU usage bounce from 0 to 50 to 70 to 90 back to 50 to 0 back to 90 then to 100. Why would it do that with all the mods off. could my site be hacked into and being used for something else with out my knowledge. if so how could I check for this?

Is your site the only thing on the server?

thanks for the help

i am running on a VPS its supposed to be like a dedicated sever.

http://www.knownhost.com/services/vps.html i have the vpsLtx plan with 256 extra ram on top of what is in the base. i have increased the ram but i still have a high CPU usage.

to my knowledge other sites shouldn't affect my site.

if u suggest i find another host please give suggestions. i have been thinking about it for a while now. but thought it was something on my end. but after lately i am not so sure.

I once had that issue. It was caused by persistent connections

funny. I had the exact same problem and am using the same hosting..same plan...same memory config. I wish I could tell you what I did to correct it, but I can't as it just started functioning normally out of the blue. The only changes I made on my end were killing unnecessary tasks and removing a few hacks/mods. The thing is.... I was still seeing high server loads periodically even after those changes. I'll dig through my e-mails with KN and see if anything jumps out at me.

eta: Have you checked what processes are running during these high loads? (top and ps auwwwwfx command)

eta2: Oh and one more thing.... have you done this: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=70117?
