Looks to me as though they have created that style. Its not an addon, more of an overwrite of the default.

I know this is a late response to this thread, but that site is just using modified templates and CSS. Nothing really fancy there.

it probably also required coded modification of functions_forumlist.php

I dont think it would require any file modding... there is a small mod (template based iirc) that allows you to use CSS list properties for the subforum layout.
