Default Scared To Upgrade...

Hi,
I have vBulletin Version 3.5.4 and I want to upgrade my forum to 3.6.2, but I am scared to do that, as I fear something bad will happen and I will lose all my forum data.

Can anyone give me some handy tips to ward off the danger of falling into some bad situation?

(Except for paying 130 USD to VBulletin Experts )

Thanks

I personally haven't heard anything good yet come out of a full upgrade......Not trying to scare ya away, but if you have a bunch of mod's/hack's on your site....you will probably loose them all, or about 80% of them.
I would go to vbulletin.com and just look around in their 3.6 how do i section....and see all of the question's and error's people have run into at this point.....
I wouldn't have moved myself, cept my database got hacked last month..

Wish i could offer a more positive out look, but i just haven't seen as much positive about the new vbulletin, verses when 3.5 came out.....

Just my .02, hotwheels

I don't think I lost a single hack, and I might have gained a couple.
I have had very positive experiences upgrading except one time.
I disable all plug ins, upload the files, run the script, and one by one reenable the hacks. If the hack has a up to date equivelant I install that instead. I check before I upgrade though, and completely uninstall those that do. It's really quite simple and worth it in my opinion.

It will depend on your hacks. Do some research to see what is compatible before hand. It only took me 5 minutes to upgrade, then another 20 minutes merging template edits.

Thanks guys for your handy comments.

I have seen on vbulletin.com people complaining about different errors occured after updating.

So, I gather I should first disable all mods / plugins, then upgrade and finally install all of the mods / plugins again.

But do you think the changes made in the templates will cause problems?

That makes a lot of sense. Thank you.

An absolute must is backup your database before you start, then if you get into a mess (which really you shouldn't), you can just restore the database and go back to using your 3.5 files.

Working with vBulletin since 2001/2002, only once or twice can I ever remember an issue with an upgrade and even then it was easily solved. This counts both my expirence as a customer and as a member of the vBulletin support team.

Upgrading is safe, and in a worst case senario you should have your backup.
