Unless it's a security risk, a legal court order or a breach in policy (but may not be a good enough reason), I don't see the need to read other user's PM's. In fact, if anyone did that to me I'd lose respect, pack up my bags and leave. Is there a justification for reading the PM's?

If that's the case then let your members come to you if another user is making them feel uncomfortable. Privacy is something we all cherish. Just because you have the power to do so doesn't mean you need to execute it. Ethically, it's plain wrong.

If a user (or multiple users) come to you and complain about one user, what steps would you take to verify their issues then?

Forwarded PM's can be easily faked.
Directly asking a person could result in them telling a lie.

The only way to be sure of the matter is to have access to all the data.

That's not to say that a person should be a snoop and poke at every PM flying across their board, but when it comes to investigating complaints, one needs to be thorough.

Either way, one should not expect true privacy online, unless you happen to know that it's encrypted at every step, and only the recipent can encrypt it easily. And even then, if someone takes that great of an interest in it, it may not be private.

The PM's consists of two parties: Sender and receiver. The receivers, people who are getting harrassed, will most likely have saved their PM's from the suspected trouble maker. I use "suspected" because at this point I would not know if he/she is or isn't one. I'll ask for the PM's with the knowledge that while they won't be conclusive to the argument, they can be used as evidence if validated.

I will also speak with the person or people in question privately to get a sense of what's going on. If needed, then I'll establish a dialogue of some sort with the people involved. Usually by this time I'd have a sense of the matter and will be able to come to a workable solution.

As an Admin, I want to avoid a false-positive at the very least as not only my reputation will be on the line but so will my site have a black mark. As an Admin I'd give everyone a benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise.

Oh i have to agree 1000000000%.

I would never do that to a member they are "private" if they werent private they wouldve never named them "priavte Messages"

What does it matter? The guy wanted to know if there was a way -- his question got answered, so leave it at that. Let him be nosey and the rest of us can mind our own business and keep private messages private.
