Well, I'm currently using 2.3.7 cause I find it most comfortable to work with. However, I can't seem to get the above mentioned hack to work.

I re-read the whole thread and applied all the steps but still to no avail. The categories won't work. Avatars though of different categories are all collated together.

How do I make it work so that avatars will only be displayed in the categories I sorted them into and not together no matter what category I choose?

It's probably best you ask for support in the actual hack thread.
