showing results by year. having troubles.

im building an announcements archive page for our forums. ive managed to get all the announcements displayed on a page and correctly linked (globally and by forum), but im having troubles grouping the results by year. we have announcements dating back to 2000 and id like to group (and display) them by year starting with january 1 200X to december 31 200X.

2000
- announcement

2001
- announcement

etc...

ive looked into the announcement table, at the startdate/enddate fields, but i dont recognize the data in the fields.

ive created a custom template to display the results. can this be done in the template via conditionals? or does it need to be done n the php file? how can i make this work?

any help would be greatly appreciated.
