How do you keep good staff.
I thought I would post this here (was hijacking another thread).
Myself this is how I run a community, it will not work for all, but it has severed me well. There are 4 groups , Admin, Super Mod, Mods, Members Level of importance. Admin (If you have good admin that is) Members (with out them the rest is a waste) Super Mods (By this point we hope they are good for staff) Mods Myself I view it as the staff is to serve the community; all staff (even admin) must adhere to the rules as would a member. Now in communitys we try to give our members some flexibility due to people do make minor slip ups and time to time things happen, but when it comes to staff this is not allowed. I stress to staff that they have no reason to step out of line, they are there to enforce the board rules, and to help people. How can someone who is suppose to enforce a rule break a rule by mistake? I had the common problem at one time of staff thinking they are better then others, to solve this I fired staff that would use their powers with out just cause, also implemented a staff vote on all discipline actions. So if someone (mod, super mod, admin) disciplines someone it goes into review by the staff and voted on for the best action. This stops any over zealous staff member from trying to be a forum god. I hope others post how they deal with their staff, some would benifit I am sure. |

Well, I would deal with mods breaking rules with warnings and that, and if they continue to slip up, probably let them go. Everyone makes mistakes, even moderators will, so you can't expect any of them to never slip up, but you can't be too harsh if they do as you don't know whether they meant to break the rule or did it by mistake.

Yes , but need to be more harsh (atleast in my view) then if was a member, due to the fact staff should know better (this goes for myself as well on my board).
I seen a couple saying they have trouble with staff wanting to play power roles, hence main reason I started this thread. I beleive staff have no excuse for error in rules, myself knowing the rules of my board well I always double check my posts before I post them to ensure I am not going to break rules that I am to enforce. |

The folks on the staff are human, and will make mistakes like everyone else does. Especially with a heated topic.
The trick is to pull in staff members who don't want the job to begin with. Drag the best people in screaming and kicking all the way. You don't want the individuals who are looking for the position. As for the ones that look at it as a status symbol? Buh bye... They're not wanted nor needed. |

It is unfair if you come down harder on Mods - That's like another kick in the teeth - The first being that they've been informed they've broken a rule... If you expect everyone to follow the rules but allow them slip-ups for human nature, you have to remember that Mods are also human Satan |

You know a problem I have had on my board before is that I yank a mod for his/her actions and get a backlash from members who dont understand why I yanked them. Sometimes I just hate running a board, probably why I spend so much time here.

i do something very underhanded i normally steal good mods from another forum. and there have been those times that i asked them politly to step down. other times i just sent them an email with the reason why they were banned. some things are unforgivable imo.

How do you all handle when a mod has been gone for a long period of time say like a two weeks or a month or two?

We actually encourge our staff members to take a break every now and then. The site owner and myself have actually taken 6 month breaks for personal reasons (no, not at the same time). You come back refreshed and able to do the work again.
