Show news on front page

Ok, I've been searching for hours and the only hack that does this is Rafe's, but I could not get it to work.

Could anyone help me with this? All I need is to show the first post from a thread on my main page, along with how many replies, date posted, poster, etc. from a specified forum.

Edit: ok, I managed to get it to work, but I am using 2 files and a third one to call the news. One file takes the news and puts it into a txt file, then I call that file from my index. Is there any easier way?
