Forum Spotlight Script

My company wants to setup something that allows us to post interesting thread news at the top of the forums in the form of an image. I'm not really sure how to explain what it is, but here are a couple of sites that have what I'm looking for. You'll notice a series of thumbnail images above the forums that link to various threads. From what I understand, there is a backend that allows you to ad the images and links, which automatically appear in order above the forums, and drop off as new items are added.

Any help identifying what kind of scripting would accomplish this would be greatly appreciated.

actually currently developing something to similar to that except it pulls all threads from a specific forum but it could be modified to choose threads with a select marking etc.

I too am trying to figure out which hack SpinQuad uses. I've searched for "gallery"
and "images" and variations including "pulling thumbs."

Anyone know what hack is used at Spinquad for those four thumbs at the top?

I do the same on my forum, but manually, with an external php script and an include in the header.
Not too long to do (the longer is to do the thumbnail, which solution you choose), the only problem is that i'm the only one who can do it (I must upload the the server FTP, edit the external php file...)

I only created a plugin "Illustration" which is based on the hook "global_start" with this code :

ob_start();
include('your_path_to_the_file/the_php_file.php');
$illustration = ob_get_contents();
ob_end_clean();

And the php file is only a simple table with illustrations inside. But for the images in the table, I enter full url (IE, http://www.yoursite.com/img.jpg) because I use some custom pages which are not hosted in the same server, but locally files is ok too.
