I installed the petz hack a week or so ago and it's just fubar'd my forums up more than I would have liked it to. I'd like to uninstall this so I can continue onward. The biggest problem I have is I am not able to change / create usergroups. I was told that the problem was due to the petz hack, so I am trying to get rid of it.

Please help me if you can. Also, please talk to me as though I am an idiot. I like explinations on what to do and how to do it. I'm not stupid... but I'm no genius.

You should generally backup your files and database before installing hacks. If you did that you can just reupload the backup.

Otherwise you have the option that some install scripts allow you to uninstall as well, then you'll just have to undo all the file changes.
