What are current market rates for hacks, mods, etc.?
I've been searching these vbulletin.org forums to find some guidelines on what current market rates are for hiring someone to do vBulletin-related work, including hacks, skin modifications, etc. I'm not sure what (if any) forum is the best place to post this question (if this thread should go somewhere else, could an admin please move it?).
I know that people can make requests for services over in the Service Requests forum, but generally the discussions are private. So, can anyone provide rough guidelines as to the rates for various vB work? Simple hacks? Template changes? Style modification? What's done on an hourly basis, and what's done flat fee? Thanks! |

Depends on the amount of work you're wanting too..

I'm actually asking as to what I should charge. Someone I know is buying vB, and wants the design changed a bit, and wants some 'static' pages hacked in using the vB template system. But I need to know what a reasonable rate is to charge him.
Is most vB work done on an hourly, or flat fee basis? |

I charge based on what I believe to be the complexity, and also based on the solidness of the code I intend to offer.
If you haven't got a portfolio yet to demonstrate what you can do you might need to charge less - but IMO you are best served to make an estimate on how long it will take you and quote a flat fee... |

i personally ask how much is the customer willing to pay and then i reason how much i think its worth and then we find a means that is reasonable and fair for both, i also request that half is paid upfront

I don't know actualy prices for style changes. But for coding works, it's not rere to pay per code line (if you have a good and efficient coder) 0.50$ per codeline are normal to my knowledge. Some are also offering flat prizes, for example small hack 5$ ... It also depends on the time after the work is done. Is the author allowed to sell it later to other people as well, or do you want it exclusively? You have to consider much things, so a general answer is hard to give. |

I have an hourly rate of around £20 for PHP coding (the underlying language of Vb), however, that is flexible. If its going to be a long job then I tend to do a fixed price quote. I also take into consideration how much gain, financially or time-saving etc the client will get from using my code, and various other factors.

I'd never charge per line, lol.
I've done enough work now to look at whatever needs doing and know how long to spend on it. Then come up with a quote based on my time for that. |
