I have a membership system that has a "screen name" field. Can I use membership system to log users into the board automatically?

If not, will it require a lot of modification?

not easy I would say.

I would strongly suggest to dump your old membership system, convert members into vb members and use vb membership system for whatever old membership system is for.

It's easier to work it the other way like Logician says - use the vB database for your membership, and integrate the rest of your site around it.
