I am trying to change the point's hack so that alpha (letter) characters cannot be put into that field for a user through the admin or mod panel. Since the field is a custom user field I am not sure how to do it. Is this possible?

yes, open phpmyadmin, gointo the table that has the userprofile fields (for which one at the moment) and change the type of field to int (or integer).
