I am getting another fish tank tomorrow!!!
I have a lot of fish. I have a 55 gallon with koi and a 20 gallon with ranchu goldfish. Tomorrow, the petco dollar per gallon sale is going on. I am going to get a 40 gallon tank to put my ranchus in because they are getting larger. I also can't wait until spring. We are building a 1500 gallon pond for the koi that are currently in the 55 gallon.

In Utah? I've always wondered if the Koi had a problem in places that got really cold in the winter being outside? I've always wanted to have a Koi pond.

As long as you have a decent heater in the bottom of the pond, even it the top freezes, they should be fine.

I have two outdoor ponds with Koi and have never used a pond heater. Usually normal winter for us means the ponds are completely covered in ice for 2 months so all I use is a floating pond de-icer in each one. What these do is keep a small hole open in the ice to allow noxious gasses such as carbon dioxide out of the pond. Of course all pumps for filters and waterfalls are turned off, over 10 years I have maybe lost 2 or 3 Koi to overwintering in the ponds.

Well that's pretty cool, never knew about the floating de-icer.

Just make sure if you are building any outside ponds to have good depth if you live in a colder climate area, both of my outdoor ponds are 4 - 5 feet at the lowest point. Plus Koi do not digest food when the water is cold so I stop feeding them when the water hits 50 degrees F. When the water in the fall gets to around 75 degrees I stop with their regular food and lettuce heads and switch to a winter blend of food. But stop at 50 degrees as if they do eat food they do not digest it and it can sit and rot in their intestines causing sepsis and the Koi will usually die.
