Have you thought about enabling friendly url's? Its not a custom edit, but it'll make that part of the url go away and replace it with something nicer looking
Nobody that I know of has ever asked to have this done, so there really aren't any steps we can write out since none of us has ever tried to do it before. You would basically have to replace all showthread.php in all the files with the new name, and the same in all templates and phrases. And, rename the file itself, of course.
Please be aware that if you ever have problems on your site and ask for help, the first thing people will tell you is to upload all new default files to your site and to use a totally default style. That means to undo all your custom work.
