Default Renaming Admincp/Modcp

I've run across the suggestion in several posts that we should be renaming both admincp and modcp.

I think I understand the rationale, although as you need an ID and password to access them, and to be set up as an Admin or Supermodeator (?) as well, is this just a 'more is better' thing?

As I can only find folders named either of those, that means we should be renaming the folders? And I'm guessing that it's better to do that when admincp/modcp aren't active/running.

It's always a good idea to rename them.

Changing the admincp/modcp folder names prevents username/password dictionary/brute force attacks on the login for those areas.

Just be sure to rename them in config.php. And remember they are renamed when you do any sort of mod install or vB update.

Since they are both folders another way to disable any brute force attack is simply protect them using .htaccess

Doing that just opens up the password set with htaccess to brute force attacks.

Unless you have a static IP address and lock the folder down so only that IP can access the folder.

Thanks. Looks like I have another task to do.

And re 'And remember they are renamed when you do any sort of mod install or vB update.

How does renaming them affect a mod?

Also, remembering is the real problem. I can just see me trying to remember that...

An addon upload, could include files that go into your default admincp/modcp folders, those files will have to be uploaded to the renamed folders instead.

After you renamee the folders you could create empty versions to receive any new files. Then all you have to do is remember to move the new files to the renamed folders
