IE6 Friendly Detection
Ok, well discussing IE6 on vb.com is a complete waste of time, as you simply get blowhards declaring that nobody in the web development industry should ever pander to IE6 compliance ever again, mostly ignoring the reality that 1000s of businesses will not upgrade due to the millions it costs to upgrade the core applications that run inside it.
Therefore until jelsoft get their act together is there any chance somebody could look at an ie6 detector which could launch a lite, attractive but functional VB4 template, including icons that don't look terrible, and postbits that don't have huge gaps in them? |

hum, IE6 is not supported by their own creators, why would someone else on the planet do so?
your point is not good... thousands of businesses already upgraded their systems... you just do not want to do it yourself because you don't want to... so why anybody would do it for someone who do not want to? |

vBulletin 3 is still provided, which supports Internet Explorer 6. I'm pretty sure that will be your most common response from Jelsoft.
I'm not certain if IE6 users would prefer to use the most recent software available, since they use IE6. |

Both responses typical of the ignorance and head in the sand attitudes I've come to expect from Jelsoft apologists. Of course had there been a big warning sign on the sales page adverising the ridiculous incompatibility with ie6 I would not have upgraded. You also assume I have the slightest bit of control over a major finance company's it policy, and that me admining my dorum in work time is adequate morivation for them to make a $10m upgrade on their crm systems which only run in ie6. In the meantime 1000s of other vb users have the same problem and I either need a fix for it or will have to start considerimg a migration to ipb.

Ah, you upgraded yourself. I'm not a Jelsoft fan by any means, I personally would not use vBulletin 4, but this is not the place for that sort of discussion.
Perhaps a refund would be better served. Not sure if that's possible though. Actually, maybe I'm slightly out of the loop. Am I right in saying that vBulletin 4 is incredibly broken in IE6, rather than just having features missing? |

Clearly you are out of the loop. Even VBulletin.com looks broken in IE6, the post bits are just horrible looking, and the icons looks horrible. but how difficult can it be to fix it, with a simple icon/template fix and detection of browser type?? I would suggest that before passing judgement on threads like this you take a look at the problem. 3.8 looked fine in IE6....nothing in the sales pitch suggested that VB4 would be the trainwreck that it is in IE6 (and 7 for that matter)...but nobody seems interested in lifting a finger for the significant portion of users that have NO CHOICE in the matter. This is not laziness, it is simple reality.
Now you can call it whinging (and don't call me kid, I'm 34), but I call it being conned into believeing I was buying a Gold product, not an incompatable bug ridden piece of crap, that no developer seems to care about, and that I am forced to request special hacks on .org to fix mistakes that should have been addressed in Beta, and still have net been addressed in 4.03. |

As for IE6 (@ ldma) - IB have made a considerable number of changes to make vb4 functional in IE6 so I dont really see what the issue is. |

The functionality of the 4.xx series isn't as bad as it use to be. Is it the PNG transparency you have an issue with? There is a java script mod on .org that will bridge that gap. However, I don't know if it will work on the new platform.
Do a search for png transparency (or similar) and it should pop up. |

this is a world-wide known bugfix that you can find here: http://www.twinhelix.com/css/iepngfix/
you simply install it by default in your headinclude, and tada... this is not related to vBulletin but to .png files themselves in any webpage. |
