Around 15% of American citizens are not covered at all by any form of health-care. Another substantial percentage are under-covered. Obama would like see all USA citizens covered by health-care, and has left it Congress to make its own plan, seeing as how Congress doesn't like outsiders making plans.
Owing to the extremely high cost of health-care in the USA (per citizen, it costs twice as much in percentage of GDP than for a citizen the UK), the whole system is a nightmare for any reformer, and an utter nightmare for anyone who wants to see all USA citizens covered under the present USA system (which Obama does not want to try changing). Frankly, Obama is in an impossible situation through no fault of his own on this, and it's only getting worse; health-care costs are steadily and quickly climbing upwards in the USA, and it's complete political dead-lock on actually getting any sanity into the system. |

The healthcare "reform" is being sought the WRONG way. 1 word = Pharmaceuticals. What happens when 100% of people are covered and noone can afford their $1000/mo heart tablets? Up shytcreek with no paddle and no heart tablets LOL. Wanna reform healthcare? Start with the multi-trillion dollar pharmaceutical industry to help cover the costs instead of taxing the hell out of "rich" people.
I think it's a nobel enterprise. The concept of all citizens having access to healthcare could only be a wonderful thing to embrace. But rushing legislation through congress in some sort of gungho "I'm gonna get ya suckas" type of fashion is all the wrong way of going about it. As it seems now - I would call the "reform" both half-assed and a major fail. The reason: because it's being rushed and there is no comprehensive PLAN developed yet. Hell - Obama in fact was caught on tape saying he didn't know about certain parts of the plan and blablabla = Supposedly it's HIS (and the Democrat-lead Congress') plan. Yeah... Major fail. Jacquii. |

The US is the only wealthy industrialised nation to not have some type of Universal Health Care so it really is about time that a US President starts something apart from a scandal or a war. God forbid he doesn't know every detail of how it will come together and suppose that means it is a fail in some eyes even though its still freaky that countries with a fraction the GDP have managed to pull it off (which includes dealing with the 'multi trillion dollar' pharmaceutical companies).

Health care is rising in america, and remember this is the same country that whinges that it has to pay to much for petrol or diesel when in effect they get it at a quarter of the price we pay over here in the UK.

In one of health insurance forums, most of agents are freaking out at prospect of losing their small businesses of insurance agencies. They pitch all kinds of opinions and hope this thing fails.
Obama vs. Insurance Being a non-US citizen this seems a necessary thing to do, but I highly doubt it will be a success, given the huge conflict of interest with major private heathcare providers. |

It is corporate greed at its worse to fight against the basic human right of health care just because your pay check depends on someone your ubur expensive, weaselly insurance policy. Between pharmaceutical and insurance companies, he will have an almost impossible fight on his hands, but at least he has the balls to fight it.

In the Netherlands we have a system where a central organisation (gov.) creates a list of all possible medication and the maximum reasonable (market) price. Often there is more then 1 choice of medication: High priced brands, and often also cheaper alternatives. The list will only list the max. price for unbranded (if available) and insurances may only pay up to the listprice.
This does effectively break the entire marketing machine of these producers where they will "bribe" doctors etc to subscribe their own (expensive) version of the medicine. Prices (both unbranded and big brand names) have dropped a lot. Customer (patient) will always have the choice to take the generic (cheap medicine) or pay the difference themself. |
