Default How to stop registrations from China?

Hi everybody,

i maintain a really small vBulletin over at forum.odoo.tv. Although it is a small board I have between 2 to 4 registrations every day from people coming from china.

As Odoo.tv is a german website only, I believe these are only spammers. They never post anything, always are born on january 1st 1980 and always have numbers in theier usernames.

I use german questions like "was ist drei mal vier" (= what is three multiplied by four) during the registration. No captcha images. Furthermore I use the Check4Spam Addon. But this only helps if someone actually posts something.

So, do you have any ideas to get rid of these unwanted registrations? How do you handle this on larger boards? Is there an addon which I might not have found yet? Would it make sense to block certain ip ranges (i.e. using the .htaccess file)?

Thanks for your ideas

Search for "timezone", all mods, titles only. There's a mod that will keep certain timezones from registering.

if you look here you can add all these ips to your ip ban,
http://www.ipdeny.com/ipblocks/data/countries/cn.zone
but rather than add each one, just add the first 3 numbers followed by a dot and that will cover all numbers in that range

example........

Rather than adding this

58.14.0.0/15
58.16.0.0/16
58.17.0.0/17
58.17.128.0/17
58.18.0.0/16
58.19.0.0/16
58.20.0.0/16
58.21.0.0/16

just add

58.

and then go to the next new first number, save a lot of work this way

Add this mod too, You'll be able to see all the bots it stops too https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthrea...ion+Time+Check

Good luck

Not to be a PITA, but its sounds like you are suggesting that Forum Spammers only come from China. Well, I just checked the numbers on StopForumSpam for the past two days and the total number of spammers that were reported is 714. From a quick analysis it looks like:

China 82
USA 140
Germany 120
Russia 62

From my perspective and these numbers, if I were you, I would be a LOT more concerned about registrations from your own country and the USA than China frankly.

HTH

No matter where other people's spam comes from, 99% of mine comes from registrants who choose Beijing as their time zone.

How many questions have you got? For Q&A to be effective, you need more than just a couple. Alternatively, have you tried using reCAPTCHA?

Thats the same with me, beijing is where they are from, and its a problem with these chinese registrations on my board, but no more

I still get 2 or 3 attempted sign ups but its nothing that Is Bot mod can't stop so i'm lucky.

Since my board has been up in sept 2008, i've only had to delete 2 accounts (Human spammers)

the fight continues.........................
