Spammers
Wow, they are getting so bad! I have been banning IP's but they keep coming back.
About 90% of them are from Eniwetok, Kwajalein, and in the past 2 weeks I've been getting about 15 registrations a day from them. Its terrible. Is there anything I can do that I'm not already doing? I require email confirmation already... --------------- Added [DATE]1226581710[/DATE] at [TIME]1226581710[/TIME] --------------- oh, somebody plese help me here. |

I'm running a vB site that's about six months old. I had waves of spammer registrations like you describe. I was banning their emails and IPs but that didn't stop the flood.
I heard from another site manager that many spam-bots that register spammers on forums can defeat the image verification that uses the image with the little letters that the user has to type in. I was using that type of image verification. At this other manager's suggestion, I changed to user verification by question and answer. I made up a dozen questions that anyone who comes to my site will easilly know the answers to. Since then, I have had zero spammer registrations in the last month. So you might try that. You could use simple questions like "what is 2 + 2" or something, or make up questions that your site visitors will all know the answers to. It has totally worked for my site. |

There are loads of recommendations of all the various anti spam mods, just do a search and install a few of them that should stop a good 99% of all spam bots
"IS Bot" is a great mod that will stop the majority of spambots, But you do really need to have a few alternative solutions in place. A quick way to ban IP's is to ban the whole range, say for example 61.777.234.55 is a spammer from China, and you don't really want any members from china on your forum, you can ban the entire range simply by adding 61. into the ip banning section. If members take a proactive approach to safeguarding their forums then the majority of automated spambot registrations can be avoided. As the saying goes Prevention is better than cure reCaptcha is standard in vBulletin 3.7.4 Good luck guys |

I found just using the question and answer option stopped them cold. Even something really simple- what color is grass? (green).
