Does updating upgrading redesigning your website affect google ranks?
If so how much does it affect them? Can you bounce back quickly? |

Page rank is pretty meaningless. An updated can affect your search engine placing if you 1) made the page too big, 2) removed content from being easily accessible, 3) introduced more duplicate content, 4) Google thinks your cloaking.
How it takes to recover depends on what penalties are applied. |

actually, you did not read the google documentation about ranks if you think the design can affect anything...
the look of a site is not taken into consideration by google... only the content of the site is used... google extract anthing useless inside tags, so only text is parsed... |

I am not referring to looks but the structure of the links having an effect. Of course looks doesn't have any effect but if you had all your content in the open before and now it is in flash menus or hidden in javascript then it would affect your rankings.

It most certainly can affect your rankings. Generally when you change the design of your site, you change your markup. Now if you change your markup to include more semantic tags where appropriate, e.g. putting thread titles in a <h1></h1> tag and removing un-necessary keywords from your <title></title> you can boost your rankings.
