Looking for some newb help with promotions. Desperate! Thanks!
I am desperately trying to change the permissions so that brand new members cannot post in one of my forums. They can have the same access as all registered members to the other forums, but..there is just one forum I need to make sure they can't post in until they've been registerd for 20 days and made 20 posts. I've tried to ask on the forums, read the user guide and played with it myself, but am still having trouble.
As it is now, all members (besides mods and admins) are all just in one user group. I know where I go to the permissions, promotion and usergroup manager in the Admin CP, just don't know how to make this work. Btw, I don't user "Reputations" on my forum for my members and don't really want to. I don't want to change anything for the other user groups, just make that change. I know I have to add a new promotion, but am not 100% certain how to do this properly to achieve what I'm trying to achieve. I don't understand what the "Reputation Level" is either. Can someone walk me through how to do this properly? I CAN'T THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR ANY HELP...THIS IS SOMETHING PRETTY IMPORTANT TO ME AND I'M HAVING A HARD TIME WITH IT. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Create a new usergrup with the regular acces and to the normal one reduce de permition for that area and create a promotion that said after 10 post change it to the other usergrup thatys how I did it with mine so they caqn not play before 10 post.

Can I not just use the existing registered members user group and leave it as is? there are like 1400 people in that main group. when the new members get promoted, they will go right to the regular members usergroup.
does that make sense. If I creat a new UserGroup and call it New Users, and set the Promotion to Greater then or Equal to 20Posts and 20 Days, then all the members in that group will get promoted to the Registered Members group. BUT, as it is, EVERYONE that registers is automatically part of the Registered Member group. How do I make it so everyone who registers is FIRST in the New Members Group I can set up and then after they hit 20 posts and 20 days, they get moved in to the Registered Member Group. If you go to the Admin CP and look at the Add Promotions screen, you'll see the firlds I'm trying to figure out how to use. I don't currently use the user reputations or ranks, don't want to either. I have all my members right now in the Registered Members group and that's all good, I don't want to change that. Any additional help with detail and maybe the steps i need to take would be HUGELY apprecaited!!!!!! |

Hi deadhook,
Sorry RZ500 had it right but its not that much work really. You will need to make a new usergroup and set up a promotion but the new usergroup is for your old members not the new ones. 1. setup a new usergroup with normal permissions 2. Change the permissions in the old registered users usergroup to exclude the area you want to exclude new members from. 3. set up a promotion so that anyone with the 20 posts can be promoted from the registered users to the new usergroup. 4. Go to schedule tasks and run the user promotions task this will move all your old members to the new usergroup in one hit. If you have altered or added a new user title then you will also have to update the titles from admin cp as well but that is also a one hit job. I had this set up on my forum and it works well. Good luck Tinks |

Okay, I see..so this way all the old members will automatically be promoted.
Let me ask though, how come you can't just set up a new user group and make that one the one with the revised permission and then have people promoted FROM that one to the existing Registered members group? So in the Promotions Screen, the very top "UserGroup" setting, there's where I put the existing Registered Users" group with the modified permissions, then I select "Greater Than Or Equal To" then I delete the reputation since I don't use that and put 20 and 20 in the registration and posts fields. Then I select "Reputation And Or Posts/Date" and then select PRIMARY USERGEROUP and then in the Move To UserGroup Field that's where I put the new group I made for all my registered members to go to with all the regular permissions. Is that about right? THANK YOU AGAIN VERY, VERY, VERY MUCH...I REALLY APPRECIATE IT! |

DAMN!!!
Didn't work. I created a new user group, based the permissions off of the existing Registered Group. Then I change the permissions in the original Registered Group to exclude them from posting in this one particular forum. I created a new Promotion for the Registered Member group and said that people with Greater Than Or Equal To 20 posts AND 20 days are moved to the New Usergroup. I then hit save. Didn't work. When I went to the Usergroups page it still showed all my members in the Registed Members group and noone in the new group? Most of the 1400 should have automatically been promoted. I had my long term members try to post in that forum and they coulnd't. Where did I go wrong? PLEASE HELP!!!! |

Looks like you forgot to go to Scheduled Task Manager and run the Promotions task.
Don't worry.. it will happen automatically after an hour. |
