When link is placed in a post I would like it to open in the same window rather than open in a new (target="_blank") window. How would I make that adjustment?

Well no one got back to me on this one so I had to be resourceful - Good for the brain!

I created a custom BB code for "[URL]" without target=_blank and that overwrote whatever the baked in code is...

Let me know if anyone sees anything wrong with that

shouldn't be anything wrong, I think you'd need to edit the bbcode class file otherwise
